Answer / Solution

How to disable User Account Controls on a Windows 7 PC when Tenant Pro is already installed

DISABLE WINDOWS 7 USER ACCOUNT CONTROLS

Windows 7 has very strict security features, even when a user is set up as equivalent to an Administrator. For this reason almost anything you do relating to installations and the like, will generate a message asking if you are sure you want to Allow. This feature is designed to prohibit any uninitiated items from running on your computer. This can, however, block access to the SQL Server that Tenant Pro uses to store the database on your computer, as well as cause data corruption, so it is important that you disable it. This feature is  the User Account Controls (UAC).

The UAC – User Account Controls need to be turned off.

To do that you will go to:

  1. Start>Control Panel>System and Security>Change User Account Control Settings

2.    Drag the bar all the way to the bottom, to “Never Notify.”  Click OK.

3.    A window will appear requesting that you Restart.  Click “Restart Later.”

COPY YOUR DATA FILES

You will need to move your data files to your desktop.  The default data path is C:\Program Files\Tenant Pro 7\Database, but the UAC creates a copy of your documents—including your Tenant Pro datafiles--in a hidden folder called the Virtual Store.  These duplicated datafiles will often contain the correct version of your data, and will need to be located before disabling your UAC.

To locate these files, you first will need to open “Computer”.  Hit the Alt button on your keyboard, and then click Tools > Folder Options.  Click the “View” tab at the top of the window.  In the area below, select the button next to “Show hidden files, folders, and drives,” and click Apply, then click OK.  Now open C:\>Users >*your user name*>AppData>Local>VirtualStore>Program Files (x86)>Tenant Pro 7.  Right click on “Database,” and click on Rename.  Type in “UAC” and hit enter.  Now copy that folder to your desktop.

Because it is not immediately obvious whether your original datafile or the duplicate contains the current data, you will need to copy the originals to your desktop as well.

To locate your originals, open up “Computer” again.  Now open C:\>Program Files (x86)>Tenant Pro 7.

Locate the “Database” folder, and copy it to your desktop, as well.

REMOVE TENANT PRO 7

Click Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a Program.

Select Tenant Pro 7 from the list of installed programs, and click on Uninstall/Change.

Let the Uninstall Wizard finish

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER

Reboot your computer.  DO NOT TURN YOUR USER ACCOUNT CONTROLS BACK ON

RESTORE YOUR DATA FILES

Open “Computer”, and go to C:\>Program Files (x86)>Tenant Pro 7>Database.  Move the data files that you had put on your desktop, into your Database folder

Open Tenant Pro, click on File>Restore

Click on the Box labeled “Use alternative path other than default location”

Click on the Browse button that appears

Navigate to your Database folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Tenant Pro 7\Database)

Click on the drop-down arrow on the Files of Type field, and select “Access Data Files (*.mdb)”

Select your data file, and click the Open button

Click the Restore button

Close and re-open Tenant Pro
